Bright Osayi-Samuel Explains Why He Chose Nigeria Over England

Birmingham City right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel has opened up on why he chose to represent Nigeria over England, citing his strong connection to his heritage and the team spirit within the Super Eagles. Born in Okija to Nigerian parents and having spent fourteen years in England, Osayi-Samuel was eligible to play for both countries but ultimately followed his heart.

The 28-year-old has been a key player for Nigeria, featuring in six of the seven matches during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign. His standout performance came in the semifinal against Morocco in Rabat, where he helped keep the Atlas Lions at bay for 120 minutes before Nigeria lost on penalties.

Osayi-Samuel explained that his upbringing shaped his decision. “My friends have asked me the same question. I was strongly influenced by my country — my parents exposed me to Nigerian culture, weddings, food, everything,” he told OmaSportsTV. He added that the camaraderie and energy in the Nigerian squad were decisive factors: “Everyone is having fun. You never see bad feelings; even the players who aren’t playing are smiling and excited. This is one of the reasons I will always choose Nigeria first.”

The right-back originally started his career as a winger but transitioned to defense at Fenerbahçe. The position change opened the door for his national team call-up, which he regarded as an honor. “If this is how I get to play for Nigeria, I’ll take it because I’ve always dreamed of representing my country,” he said.

Family influence also played a role. Osayi-Samuel highlighted how his parents ensured he stayed connected to Nigerian culture, and how tournaments like AFCON allow him to give back to relatives and supporters back home. Since his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Guinea-Bissau, he has earned 32 caps for the Super Eagles, reinforcing his commitment to the national team.

For Osayi-Samuel, the decision to play for Nigeria goes beyond football; it reflects pride in his heritage, family bonds, and the unique spirit of the Super Eagles.
