Africa Must Develop Coaches To Match Europe - Eric Chelle

Former Mali coach and Nigerian football tactician, Eric Chelle, has declared that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has now reached a level that surpasses even some European leagues. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Chelle emphasized the need for African football to invest in developing coaches who can match the global standards seen in Europe.

“We have to create our own identity. For me, this AFCON is better than the league in Europe. This is great,” Chelle said, highlighting the growing competitiveness and quality of the tournament. He further called for more seriousness and professionalism in the way football is handled across the continent, stressing that Africa has the talent but must support it with structured coaching and proper management.

Chelle’s comments come ahead of Nigeria’s crucial AFCON clash on Saturday, where a win would see the Super Eagles top their group and secure a place in the knockout stages. The team will rely on key players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Akor Adams to deliver results. In Nigeria’s opening game against Tanzania, it was Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman who found the net, while Osimhen missed several scoring opportunities, a factor the team hopes to rectify in the next match.

The Nigerian camp remains confident, with Chelle backing his squad to continue their strong run in the tournament. The focus, he stated, is not just on individual performances but on building a collective team identity that can challenge the best in Africa and beyond. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely, as the Super Eagles aim to combine experience, talent, and tactical discipline to advance in what has been described by Chelle as a tournament now rivaling European leagues in quality.

Nigeria will take on their next opponent with determination, hoping to convert their promising start into a commanding position in the group stages.
