AFCON 2025: Morocco Beat Comoros 2–0 to Start Group A Campaign in Style
Morocco began their Africa Cup of Nations Group A campaign on a confident note with a solid 2–0 victory over Comoros in their opening match played on Sunday night. The Atlas Lions dominated proceedings from start to finish, controlling possession and dictating the tempo against a resilient but limited Comoros side.
The North Africans nearly took an early lead inside the opening 15 minutes after being awarded a penalty, but Comoros goalkeeper Youssouf Pandor produced a brilliant save to deny Soufiane Rahimi. The miss briefly lifted Comoros, who defended deep and tried to frustrate Morocco with compact defending. Morocco continued to pile on the pressure, enjoying over 70 percent ball possession, but found it difficult to break through before halftime.
There was further drama before the break when VAR overturned another penalty decision involving Brahim Díaz, with the referee ruling no spot-kick after review. Despite Morocco’s dominance in shots and passing accuracy, the first half ended goalless.
The breakthrough finally came in the 55th minute when Brahim Díaz fired Morocco ahead with a well-taken finish, assisted by Noussair Mazraoui. The goal settled the hosts and opened up the game, forcing Comoros to push forward in search of an equaliser. However, that approach left them exposed at the back.
Morocco doubled their advantage in the 74th minute through Ayoub El Kaabi, who calmly converted after a neat assist from Anass Salah-Eddine. The second goal effectively ended the contest as Morocco managed the remainder of the game with composure and discipline.
Comoros struggled to threaten Morocco’s goal, managing just four shots all evening, while the Atlas Lions saw out the match comfortably. The win places Morocco in a strong position in Group A and underlines their status as one of the tournament’s early favourites.
