NNL: Akwa United Ordered to Secure NPFL Promotion by Akwa Ibom Government

Akwa United have been handed a clear directive from the Akwa Ibom State government to secure promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) next season following their relegation last term.

The Commissioner for Sport, Elder Paul Bassey, issued the directive during his visit to the team’s training camp in Eket, where he expressed satisfaction with the players’ commitment and energy as they prepare for the new Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign.

Bassey commended the squad’s attitude and intensity during training, describing it as a sign of their readiness to fight for promotion. He, however, reminded the players of the club’s pedigree and urged them to play with the mentality of a top-flight team.

“I am impressed with the quality displayed in training today. The energy, intensity, and commitment are good,” Bassey said. “Remember, Akwa United is not a second division club. You must carry yourselves with that in mind and push for promotion.”

Akwa United, nicknamed The Promise Keepers, were relegated to the NNL after finishing 18th in the 2024–2025 NPFL season a disappointing end for a team that lifted the league title in 2021. The club has since embarked on an intensive closed camping exercise in Eket ahead of the new season, which is scheduled to begin on November 8.

The Uyo-based side will open their campaign against Solution FC, with expectations already mounting for a strong start as they seek a swift return to top-flight football.
