Doctors Accuse Lagos Government Of Genocide...As NUPENG Plans Solidarity Strike

Just as the doctors expressed their dismay with the Babatunde Fashola-led administration, the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has pledged to embark on a solidarity strike beginning from Monday next week, if the Lagos state government fails to recall the 788 sacked medical doctors.

President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese, who disclosed to Huhuonline.com the union's plans to embark on the industrial action, lamentedsthe insensitivity of the government to the plight of the residents of the state, made up of small numbers of all ethnic groups in the country and beyond.

Achese maintained that the State Government had no justification to sack that number even though he saw no problem in the issuance of query to the doctors by the government. According to him, the government could have sought other alternatives rather than just sacking them.

Another senior official of the union, Tokunbo Korodo, disclosed that beginning from Monday, no petroleum tanker would be allowed to load or discharge fuel in the State. He threatened that the union, in solidarity with the sacked medical doctors would ground activities in the petroleum industry and ensure that filling stations do not work when the strike begins.

In his opinion, the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, FCT, Nicholas Baamlong, slammed the Lagos State Government for signing the agreement it earlier reached with the doctors on 24th, March, 2011 and urged that they implement the agreement, .

"We condemn the insensitivity being shown by the Lagos state government to quickly address this issue which shows its total and systematic decimation of the population of the suffering masses in Lagos state in an act which we feel is tantamount to mass genocide.

"We are amazed by the grave yard silence of the Lagos state House of Assembly, the Lagos State Traditional institutions, leaders of thoughts and some critically placed individuals over this negligence to ensure the health and safety of Lagosians," he said while calling on the presidency, the National Assembly and traditional rulers to wade into the issue before it gets out of control.
