Only 3 Score Above 300 As JAMB Releases UTME Results

SAN FRANCISCO, March 30, (THEWILL) – Only 3 candidates in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scored above 300, according to official results released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Friday.

A breakdown of the results made public by JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde showed that 1, 503, 931 candidates sat for the examination nationwide, while only 1, 384, 644 results were released. Results of 5, 161 were declared invalid.

At a Press conference in Abuja, Professor Ojerinde said results from 24 centres in Rivers State were withheld, while 11 centres in Lagos suffered a similar fate. Imo, Benue, Cross River, Delta and Nasarawa had 11, 6, 3, 2, 2 and 1 respectively.

A further analysis of the results released showed that about 1, 048, 314 candidates passed the examination with about 72, 243 candidates scoring above 250 points while 366,330 candidates scored under 169, which is below the cut off mark set at 180.

901 candidates scored 270; 151 candidates scored between 200 – 249; while 374, 920 candidates scored 170 – 199.

The JAMB Registrar noted that six southern states registered the highest number of candidates for 2012 test. Imo had 123, 865; Delta 88,876; Anambra 84,204; Osun 73, 935; Oyo 71, 272 and Ogun 71, 173.

Similarly, as in the past, six northern states recorded the lowest number of applicants --Jigawa 11, 529; Kebbi 7, 364; Yobe 6, 389; Zamfara 5, 713; Sokoto 5,664 and FCT 3, 380.

In general, male candidates topped female applicants nationwide having recorded a total of 833, 082, while female candidates were 660, 522 representing 55.78 percent and 44.22 percent respectively.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) with 83, 865 applicants was the most sought after institution according to the Professor Ojerinde, while The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka followed with 82,148 applicants; The University of Benin (UNIBEN); 80,048; The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) 79, 398, The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) 76,276; The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) 64,702; Ahmadu Bello University (ABU); 56,708; University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) 48,439; University of Uyo 44,397; Imo state University 43,353; and The University of Ibadan (UI) with 40,011.
