STUDENTS' BODY TASKS PRESIDENT ON AGRIC SECTOR

THE Association of Nigerian Students at Coventry University, United Kingdom (UK), has called on President Goodluck Jonathan

to invest more in the agricultural sector, to enable the production of more food for the country's citizens.

In an email to The Guardian, Sherry Omokide, the students' representative, also implored Jonathan to 'seriously think of an alternative to the oil sector,' as the mainstay of the country's economy.

Omokide averred that the students were on their research programme in the UK to critically assess various strategies to sustain agricultural investment and enhance rural development in Nigeria.

The end result Omokide added, 'is to promote partnerships and alliance for valued chain enhancement; raise competitiveness in expanding trade within domestic and international markets; improve sector governance and policy environment for the trading sectors; and focus on the strategic value chain with prospective income growth, creation of wealth and improved capacity building in rural areas.'
