A Tribute To Late Nelson Carrilho, Sculptor Of Belonging And 2023 Winner Of The Voice Achievers Award

The world has lost a visionary maestro with the passing of Nelson Carrilho on Saturday, July 4, 2026; at 73, the Curaçao-born artist, who drew his final breath in Amsterdam, leaves a profound legacy not merely of shaping bronze, but of sculpting the very spirit of human connection by seamlessly bridging the depths of African spirituality with Western art forms, a lifelong dedication globally celebrated in 2023 when he received the prestigious The Voice Achievers Award in Amsterdam for turning heavy, unforgiving metal into an enduring invitation for dialogue, healing, and love.

For over forty years, Carrilho’s open-door studio in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam served as a sanctuary of creativity and mentorship. He viewed the grueling, costly process of sculpting not as a chore, but as a sacred duty to leave an indelible footprint on human consciousness.

Nelson Carrilho ’s artistic philosophy completely redefines the traditional boundaries of three-dimensional art. Historically, Western sculpture has often been associated with density, mass, and a commanding permanence that separates the artwork from its surroundings. Carrilho, however, famously rejected the idea that sculpture should be dense, heavy, or isolating. For him, bronze was not a stagnant medium meant to impose itself on a space, but rather a dynamic vehicle for movement, dialogue, and unity. By approaching the casting of bronze through the conceptual lenses of music and dance, he sought a delicate equilibrium between masculine and feminine energies, form and void. This unique methodology transformed the physical weight of his materials into a fluid, poetic expression of existence.

Central to Carrilho's mastery was his intentional use of negative space. He deliberately left holes and openings in his sculptures, allowing sunlight, nature, and the surrounding wind to flow straight through the artwork. This technique ensured that his monuments were never static or detached from reality; instead, they remained in a constant state of interaction with the natural world and the changing seasons. To Carrilho, the spaces he left empty were just as vital as the metal itself. These deliberate voids served a profound metaphorical purpose, representing the unseen connections that bind all human beings to nature and to one another, completely transcending geographic borders or skin color. Through this harmony of bronze and emptiness, Carrilho created a timeless visual language rooted in universal belonging.

Mama Baranka: Earth, Origin, and Endurance

Nowhere is his philosophy more immortalized than in his magnum opus, Mama Baranka (Mother Rock), standing proudly in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark. Commissioned in 1984 following the tragic racist murder of 15-year-old Antillean boy Kerwin Duinmeijer, Carrilho bravely looked past the immediate urge for an angry, raised fist. Instead, using his own mother as his muse, he gifted the world a monument of "positive power"—a sturdy, majestic Black mother symbolizing tolerance, endurance, and the very origin of humanity.

Today, Mama Baranka remains a living, breathing monument. Every year during annual commemorations, the community gathers to place vibrant flowers into the deliberate openings of the statue. It stands as a beautiful manifestation of Carrilho's ultimate goal: art that invites people in, transforms grief into strength, and blooms with the collective love of the living.

In his later years, Nelson Carrilho expanded his artistic canvas far beyond local borders, dedicating his immense talents to public monuments in international spaces to ensure his message of unity reached a global stage. Yet, despite his rising international acclaim, he remained deeply rooted in grassroots mentorship. He famously kept his studio doors in the Jordaan district permanently unlocked for the youth, spending his final years actively passing down his wisdom and craftsmanship. For Carrilho, creating art was inextricably linked to building a living legacy; he wanted to ensure that the next generation fully understood the weight of identity, history, and community responsibility. Though he has now stepped out of the physical frame, his presence remains profoundly structural. Much like the intentional holes in his bronze masterpieces, his departure leaves a physical void, but it is a space that will forever be filled with light, memory, and the enduring strength of the Mother Rock.

In honour of this extraordinary journey, the team at The Voice Achievers Award, standing shoulder to shoulder with all past awardees globally, extends their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Carrilho family, friends, and the global artistic community. Nelson's historic win at the 2023 awards in Amsterdam remains a proud milestone in our collective history, celebrating a man who used his genius to give a voice to the voiceless. As an alumni network of visionaries and changemakers, we deeply mourn the loss of our brother and fellow laureate, yet we find solace in knowing that his footprint is permanently etched into the consciousness of humanity. Rest in peace, Maestro of Connection; your light continues to shine through the bronze.
