Photo News: Oyo Pupils, Teachers Rescue Operation By Security Forces
Nigerian security forces demonstrated exceptional professionalism in the strategic and successful execution of an operation to secure the release of students and teachers abducted by Ansaru terrorists in Oyo State on May 15, 2026. Following a direct presidential mandate, a Joint Inter-Agency Task Force, orchestrated by the Defence Headquarters, carefully planned and coordinated the high-stakes rescue mission. The comprehensive deployment combined the specialized combat capabilities of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force with critical support elements from across the nation's premier security architecture, including the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
This highly coordinated, intelligence-led operation reached its successful conclusion on July 9, 2026, ensuring the safe recovery of the captives after nearly two months in captivity. The multi-agency collaboration underscored a significant milestone in national security synergy, proving the effectiveness of unified intelligence sharing and tactical precision among diverse military and paramilitary bodies. By neutralizing the immediate threat and safely extracting the victims without compromising the mission's integrity, the joint forces validated the federal government's strategic approach to combating terrorism and handling complex hostage situations across the country.
The Ansaru terrorists (formally Jama’atu Ansaril Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan , meaning "Vanguard for the Protection of Muslims in Black Africa") is suspected to have carried out the kidnap of the schoolchildren and teachers. The terrorist group is a prominent jihadist terror group that operates as Nigeria’s primary al-Qaeda franchise . Established in January 2012 as a splinter faction of Boko Haram, the group broke away due to ideological rifts, publicly condemning Boko Haram's indiscriminate killing of Muslim civilians. Led initially by Khalid Barnawi and Abubakar Adam Kambar, Ansaru aligned operational tactics with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), carving out a reputation for sophisticated, high-profile kidnappings of foreign nationals and targeted attacks against Nigerian state architecture.
The group's recent geographical expansion into the South-West zone culminated in the May 15, 2026 mass abduction of 39 pupils and 7 teachers from three agrarian schools in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State. Moving fluidly from their traditional strongholds into the Old Oyo National Park , the radicalized local cell launched the attack as a desperate leverage play. Information from security sources indicated that the cell initially demanded the federal government release their detained top commanders, Abu Bara’a and Mahmud Al-Nigeri, in exchange for the hostages.
The crisis concluded when a joint military and intelligence operation successfully extracted the victims alive, neutralizing several terrorists and arresting eight others, without bowing to the group's demands or paying a ransom.
