Kogi Female Teacher Dies Days After Assault By Parent Over Child’s Discipline
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 30-year-old female teacher, Maryam Usman, who reportedly died days after she was assaulted by the parent of a pupil she had disciplined at a private school in Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state.
This was just as the command said it has launched an investigation into the incident, which has sparked outrage over the safety of teachers carrying out their duties in schools.
The state police command's spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, who confirmed the unfortunate incident on Sunday, disclosed that the case of culpable homicide was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25, 2026, following the victim's death.
According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the attack occurred on June 18 at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District.
Afusat said that one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, reportedly stormed the school and assaulted Maryam Usman over disciplinary action she had taken against a pupil.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil,” the police said.
The command added that the teacher sustained severe injuries during the assault and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before her condition deteriorated.
“The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026,” the PPRO revealed.
Police said officers visited both the scene of the incident and the deceased's residence after receiving the report and carried out the necessary documentation.
The body, according to the command, is to be moved to the General Hospital in Ankpa for medical examination and an autopsy.
"The suspects fled before the arrival of the police, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them. Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation," the PPRO stated.
