Nigerian Army Mourns As Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Emmanuel Okoye, Dies
The Nigerian Army has announced the death of Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, the Commanding Officer of the 20 Model Battalion under the 6 Brigade, describing his passing as a significant loss to the military and the nation.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the Army said Lt. Col. Okoye died on June 13, 2026.
The statement expressed the condolences of the Commander, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, as well as officers and soldiers of the Brigade to the family, colleagues and associates of the deceased officer.
“The Headquarters, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, regrets to announce the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, the Commanding Officer of 20 Model Battalion, who died on 13 June 2026,” the statement said.
Brigadier General Akaliro described the late officer as a dedicated and courageous soldier whose service record reflected professionalism, commitment and exemplary leadership.
According to the Army, Lt. Col. Okoye made remarkable contributions to the operational effectiveness of the battalion under his command and played a key role in supporting the Brigade’s security objectives.
“Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye served the Nigerian Army and the nation with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and courage,” the statement noted.
“Throughout his distinguished military career, he demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to duty, making significant contributions to the operational effectiveness of 20 Model Battalion and the attainment of the Brigade’s security objectives.”
The Army further stated that the late commanding officer’s devotion to duty, commitment to his troops and service to the country would continue to inspire military personnel across the nation.
“His service to the nation, devotion to his troops, and steadfast commitment to the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty will remain a source of inspiration to officers and soldiers across the Nigerian Army,” it said.
“His death is a great loss not only to his family and colleagues but also to the Nigerian Army.”
While mourning the officer's demise, the 6 Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to its constitutional responsibilities of maintaining peace and security and protecting the territorial integrity of the country.
The Brigade said it remained resolute in safeguarding lives and property despite the painful loss of one of its senior officers.
“While mourning this painful loss, Headquarters, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, remains resolute in its constitutional mandate to safeguard lives and property, maintain peace and security, and defend the territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement added.
The Army also offered prayers for the repose of the deceased officer's soul and strength for his family to bear the loss.
“The prayers and thoughts of the officers and soldiers of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army are with the family of the deceased during this period of grief. May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement concluded.
