LASU Student Killed In Armed Robbery Attack
A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, has died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
The deceased, a student of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, reportedly came under attack alongside his friends on the night of May 29, 2026, in an incident that occurred off campus.
Confirming the development in a statement on Wednesday, the university said it received news of the student's death with "profound sadness."
"The Management of Lagos State University received with profound sadness the news of the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos," the statement read.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased on behalf of the university community.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this tragic loss," the Vice-Chancellor said.
According to the university, immediate intervention was initiated after reports of the attack reached the school. The Acting Dean of Students' Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, was said to have coordinated support efforts, briefed the Vice-Chancellor and maintained contact with medical personnel handling the student's treatment.
The university noted that it closely monitored Joseph's condition throughout his hospitalisation before receiving news of his death on June 2, 2026.
Following his passing, LASU said its representatives met with the bereaved family, officials of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and law enforcement authorities.
The institution also pledged to work with security agencies to ensure those behind the attack are identified and prosecuted.
"The University is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice," the statement added.
The university further conveyed its sympathies to everyone affected by the loss and prayed for strength for the deceased's family.
"The University condoles with the family and all who knew him and prays that the Almighty God will give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss," the statement said. "We also pray that the soul of Otabor Boluwatife Joseph rest in perfect peace."
