AHRC Demands Immediate UN Action to End Israel’s Assault on Lebanon, Urges Congress to support the Lebanon War Powers Resolution

The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) urgently calls on the United Nations and the international community to take decisive action to halt Israel’s ongoing military assault on Lebanon and to end its violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

Israel’s past occupation of South Lebanon from 1982 to 2000 left deep wounds, and today’s escalating attacks are inflicting a new wave of destruction on an already traumatized region.

Israel’s intensified bombardment has devastated entire towns and villages, destroying homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands that sustain local communities. The use of internationally prohibited weapons, including white phosphorus, as documented by human rights organizations has forced mass displacement and inflicted severe harm on civilians.

South Lebanon has been reduced to burned fields, shattered homes, bodies still beneath the rubble, and communities emptied of their people. Rescue teams and first responders are not being allowed to reach many areas and have even been targeted while trying to help. This devastation has also affected American citizens with family roots in South Lebanon, many of whom have lost homes, property, and irreplaceable cultural heritage. Generations of memories and traditions have been erased in moments.

AHRC condemns these attacks as grave violations of international humanitarian law. The scale and pattern of destruction mirror the devastation witnessed in Gaza in recent years, raising serious concerns about repeated war crimes and the deliberate targeting of civilian life and infrastructure.

The absence of decisive action and political will from the U.S. Administration—along with active U.S. political, military, and diplomatic support—continues to shield Israel from accountability. This has enabled the continuation of Israel’s destructive campaign and undermined global efforts to stop the violence even as civilian suffering intensifies.

AHRC urges Congress to support the Lebanon War Powers Resolution, a critical measure that would require the U.S. Administration to halt unauthorized military involvement and prevent further escalation. Such action is essential to ensuring that U.S. policy does not continue enabling violations of international law or contributing to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.

Lebanon is now facing a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis marked by mass displacement, civilian casualties, and the collapse of essential services.

Despite repeated ceasefire announcements and peace negotiations, Israel’s military operations have continued without pause, demonstrating a clear disregard for diplomatic efforts and international appeals.
