Akwa Ibom Govt Sacks Aide for Demanding Tinubu’s Resignation Over Insecurity

Osborne Ubong Okon

The Akwa Ibom State Government has relieved a media aide attached to the Office of the Political Adviser to Governor Umo Eno of his appointment after he publicly called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over the country’s security challenges.

The affected aide, Mr. Osborne Ubong Okon, was dismissed with immediate effect in a letter dated June 2, 2026, signed by the Political Adviser to the Governor, Prince Godwin Ntuk Udeh.

The dismissal followed a social media post by Okon in which he criticised the President’s handling of insecurity and suggested that Tinubu should step down.

“In a sane clime President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would've respectfully and honourably resigned. I'm of APC but truth be told,” Okon wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

Hours after the post surfaced, the Office of the Political Adviser announced his removal, citing actions deemed inconsistent with the expectations of the office.

The official statement read: “Following actions bordering on disloyalty and considering the necessity to always keep the Office of the Political Adviser purified, it has become compelling that you Mr. Osborne Ubong Okon be and is hereby relieved of your engagement as a Media Aide to the Political Adviser to His Excellency the Governor, with immediate effect and from today 2nd June 2026.”

The statement further warned members of the public against conducting official business with the former aide on behalf of the office.

“Any person having dealings with the above mentioned former Media Aide in relation to this office of his former engagement does so on his/her own peril,” the letter added.

The development has sparked discussions within political circles, particularly as Okon identified himself as a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while expressing dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s response to insecurity.

Neither the Akwa Ibom State Government nor the Presidency had issued any further statement on the controversy as of the time of filing this report.
