Rejoinder: Setting The Record Straight On The Deputy Provost Appointment Process At Kwara State College Of Education, Oro

Our attention has been drawn to a publication titled “Kwara State College of Education, Oro: A Call for Justice, Equity, and Respect for Democratic Choice,” which raises concerns and makes allegations regarding the ongoing process for the appointment of the Deputy Provost of Kwara State College of Education, Oro. While every citizen is entitled to express opinions on matters of public interest, it is imperative that public commentary is anchored on facts, objectivity, and a proper understanding of established institutional procedures.

First and foremost, it is important to clarify that the election conducted within the College for the position of Deputy Provost represents only one stage in the overall appointment process. The outcome of such an election, although significant, does not automatically translate into an immediate appointment. Like similar appointments in public tertiary institutions, the process remains subject to statutory provisions, administrative reviews, verification procedures, consultations, and final approval by the appropriate authorities. Consequently, the fact that an official approval has not yet been announced cannot reasonably be interpreted as evidence of interference, manipulation, or bias. Administrative scrutiny and due diligence are essential components of good governance and institutional accountability. They should not be misconstrued as attempts to undermine democratic processes.

Equally important is the fact that no verifiable evidence has been presented to support allegations that the Honourable Commissioner for Education has sought to influence the process in favour of any candidate. Serious allegations require credible proof. Speculation, hearsay, and unverified claims, regardless of how widely circulated, cannot substitute for facts. The publication further seeks to frame the issue primarily through the prism of senatorial district representation.

While equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging are important values in public administration, appointments within educational institutions must also be guided by established laws, institutional regulations, merit, competence, and the overall interests of the institution. No legal provision has been cited to establish that the office of Deputy Provost must necessarily be allocated on the basis of senatorial district considerations. It is also essential to recognise that fairness requires respect not only for electoral outcomes but also for the legal and administrative frameworks governing public institutions. It would therefore be premature to conclude that justice has been denied when the competent authorities have yet to conclude the appointment process.

The Kwara State Government has consistently demonstrated commitment to fairness, transparency, inclusiveness, and adherence to due process in public appointments. It is therefore unjustifiable to accuse government officials of subverting democratic choice when no official decision contrary to the outcome of the election has been announced. We urge all stakeholders, members of the College community, and concerned citizens to remain calm and allow due process to take its full course. Public statements capable of generating unnecessary tension, fostering mistrust, or inflaming regional sentiments should be avoided in the interest of peace and institutional harmony.

Kwara State has long been celebrated for its tradition of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and unity among its diverse communities. Matters of institutional administration should not be politicised in a manner that creates divisions or fuels sentiments that are unsupported by official actions or established facts. Ultimately, the appointment process should be allowed to reach its lawful and legitimate conclusion. Until that happens, conjecture, speculation, and unsubstantiated allegations serve neither the interests of the College nor those of Kwara State. We remain confident that the relevant authorities will act in accordance with the law, established procedures, and the best interests of the institution and the people of Kwara State.
