Gunmen Kill Two Policemen In Anambra

Fear gripped residents of Anambra State on Sunday night after unidentified gunmen attacked a police patrol team along the Awa–Ndiukwuenu–Ufuma Road, killing at least two officers.

The attack, which occurred in the Orumba area of the state, comes after several months of relative calm following intensified security operations that had significantly curtailed activities of armed groups and criminal elements operating across Anambra.

Witnesses said the assailants ambushed the officers while they were on patrol, opening fire on them before fleeing the scene. The attack left two policemen lying motionless on the road, while their patrol vehicle was seen parked by the roadside.

A commercial tricycle operator who witnessed part of the incident recounted how he narrowly escaped being caught in the crossfire.

According to the rider, he was travelling along the road when he suddenly heard sustained gunfire ahead, forcing him to abandon his tricycle and run into a nearby bush for safety.

“After sometime, I came out of the bush and retrieved my Keke and continued my journey, then I got to the spot where the thing happened,” he said in a voice note circulated after the incident.

“Two policemen are lying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the roadside. I decided to make this voice note to post on the platform because I think one of the policemen is still alive, so that anyone who knows police authorities will tell them to go and save their members.”

The eyewitness described the scene as distressing, noting that no security personnel were immediately visible in the area after the attack.

The latest incident has sparked concerns among residents over the resurgence of insecurity in a state that had recently witnessed a decline in violent attacks following sustained offensives by security agencies against armed groups, including gunmen often linked to separatist violence.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the attack or confirm the casualty figures.
