Alaafin Of Oyo To Install Seyi Tinubu As Okanlomo Of Yorubaland
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, is set to install Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland.
A viral invitation seen on Tuesday revealed that the installation of President Tinubu’s son is scheduled to take place in Oyo Town on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
It is understood that the planned installation is scheduled to take place approximately two weeks after the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, installed influential Ibadan businessman, Prince Dotun Sanusi, as the Okanlomo Oodua in Ile-Ife.
A palace source also confirmed that the installation will proceed as announced, stating that the local organising committee is working around the clock to ensure a successful event.
Reacting to the investiture, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Community Engagement, South-West, Moremi Ojudu, a close confidant of Seyi Tinubu, wrote in Yoruba: “Okanlomo mi owon. Egbon mi pataki. South-West gba alejo.” (My dear Okanlomo. My special brother. The South-West will receive visitors).
Recall that the Oyo monarch had challenged the Ooni of Ife over the reported installation of Sanusi as Okanlomo of Yorubaland, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum through his media aide, Bode Durojaye, for the retraction of the title.
The Alaafin had claimed that the Ooni lacked the authority to proclaim titles covering Yorubaland.
Earlier this month, the Ooni of Ife conferred the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, with the chieftaincy title of Yeye-Asiwaju of Ile Oodua.
The ceremony took place during an event marking the 10th coronation anniversary of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
Commenting on latest Seyi Tinubu’s installation, a netizen, Adedibu Ekiti, said the development shows growing supremacy battle between the two Yoruba traditional rulers.
He said, “Both traditional rulers want to use the Asiwaju family to settle scores and nothing more.
“Imagine the Ooni of Ife awarding the First Lady as Yeye Asiwaju of Oduduwa, and just a week later, the Alafin planning to award Seyi Tinubu as Okanlomo of Yorubaland.
“Meanwhile, there's an underlying disagreement about who can award a chieftaincy title encompassing the entire Yorubaland.”
“They shouldn't fall for this kind of trick.!,” he warned.
