Beyond Spiff: Samuel Ajibola’s 30-Year Career As Actor and Producer In Nollywood.
As the new sitcom Lasgidi airs on NTA and continues to attract attention from viewers across Nigeria, one of its notable cast members, Samuel Ajibola, maintains a strong presence in the entertainment industry. Widely recognized for his role as “Spiff” in The Johnsons, Ajibola is regarded as one of the top three most consistent Nigerian male actors under 40, with a career spanning three decades.
Ajibola began his acting journey in 1995 at the age of six, making his debut in Opa Williams' Tears for Love. This early start enabled him to build a long-standing career, transitioning from celebrated child roles to adult performances across both film and television.
Over the years, Ajibola has received several industry accolades. He was the first Nigerian child actor to win the Best Kid Actor award three consecutive years—at the Rhema Awards in 1996 for Eye-Witness, and at the Reel Awards in 1997 for Onome II and 1998 for Day of Reckoning.
As an adult, he won the Nigeria Inshort Film Festival Best Actor Award in 2014. He also won the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Actor in a Comedy in 2017 for his portrayal of Spiff. He also received the City People Entertainment Award for Comic Actor of the Year, further underscoring his impact within the comedy genre.
Beyond acting, Ajibola has made notable strides as a producer, particularly in projects centered on social themes. He holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian producer to feature a former president in a scripted entertainment project. In 2017, he released the web series Dele Issues, which featured former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The episode drew national attention for its creative approach to promoting civic engagement and encouraging youth participation in governance.
Ajibola’s work on Dele Issues reflects a broader commitment to using entertainment as a vehicle for public dialogue and social development. By integrating political figures into fictional narratives, he has explored new ways of engaging audiences on issues beyond entertainment.
According to sources close to the production, Ajibola is currently working on another socially focused project in a producing role, reportedly involving collaboration with a different former Nigerian president. If confirmed, this would mark his second time producing content in direct partnership with a national leader—a rare accomplishment in Nollywood.
As Lasgidi continues its broadcast run, Ajibola’s role in the series adds to his long-standing contributions to Nigerian television. From child actor to award-winning performer and socially conscious producer, his evolving career exemplifies longevity, versatility, and continued relevance in the Nollywood landscape.
