Ekobulletin Condemns ‘Maltreatment’ Of LASU Agriculture Students, Seeks Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu’s Intervention

The Lagos Higher Institutional Students Bulletin, also known as EkoBulletin, has expressed dissatisfaction over disturbing reports of inhumane treatment meted out to 400-level students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Lagos State University (Epe Campus) led by the Dean, Professor Olatunji Tajudeen Abanikannda.

Understandably, EkoBulletin is a directorate under the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy.

A statement issued by the acting Director-General of the directorate, Adekunle Adedeji, described the alleged actions of the Dean as abuse of authority, and “fundamentally incompatible with the values of academic leadership and student welfare.

It said based on credible accounts and supporting footage the students were allegedly “subjected to psychological distress, verbal abuse, and prolonged detention in harsh weather on the grounds of trivial infractions such as not bidding the Dean ‘good night.’”

“EkoBulletin views this incident as not just a disciplinary concern but a test of our collective commitment to upholding dignity, safety, and justice within higher institutions,” the statement reads partly.

The directorate thereby called on the federal government as well as the state government and the school management to take decisive, urgent and transparent action over the incident to prevent reoccurrence.

“We hereby call on the Vice Chancellor and the university's internal disciplinary committees to immediately investigate this matter and take decisive, transparent action,” the statement reads further.

“We also appeal to the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education and relevant oversight bodies to monitor and support a fair resolution process that prioritizes student safety and institutional accountability.

“Furthermore, we respectfully call upon His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who serves as the official Visitor to Lagos State University, to treat this issue with utmost urgency and moral clarity. In the same spirit, we extend this call to the Honourable Minister of Education and the Presidency to lend support in reinforcing national standards of human rights and student protection in all Nigerian institutions of learning. No student should endure fear, humiliation, or coercion under the guise of academic discipline.”

“EkoBulletin stands firmly with the affected students and reiterates our commitment to ensuring that Lagos campuses remain safe, just, and respectful environments for every learner.

“We urge the general public, civil society groups, alumni networks, and the student community at large to join in demanding justice and lasting reform. Our silence today risks normalizing abuse tomorrow,” the statement added.
