Drug Use, Sexual Behaviour Of Male Adolescents In Osogbo State.

The study examines drug use, sexual behaviour and psychological health of adolescent male in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. The objective is to examine the nature of prevalence of drug use and how these influence involvement in risky sexualand behaviour among male adolescents. A descriptive survey methodology was employed. In the study, Seven hundred (700) male adolescents were purposively selected, Three hundred (300) Senior Secondary School students and Four hundred (400) out of school adolescents in Osogbo metropolis. Applications of the Health Belief Model, Social Learning Theory of Addiction and Social Norm Theory were used in explaining the variables. Sexual Experience Survey (SES), Student Sexual Risk Scale (SSRS) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were employed in the data collection. Descriptive and Inferential Statistics were used in data analysis. Seven hypotheses were tested using a regression analysis at 0.05% level of significance. The findings show that drug use has significant influence on risky sexual behaviour among adolescents {F (2,691) =27.18,R2 =.073, p<0.05}, drug use has significant influence on psychological distress among adolescents {F(2,691) =13.895, R2=.039, p< 0.05}, age has no significant influence on risky sexual behaviour among adolescents {F(1,698) =3.182, R2=.005, p> 0.05}. Also age has significant influence on psychological distress among adolescents {F(1,698) =5.620, R2=.007, p< 0.05} adolescents whose fathers engage in formal occupation (X=32.49, SD= 4.54) display significant higher level of psychological health than their counterpart whose parents engage in informal occupation (X=31.67, SD= 4.99), t (674)=2.192, p< 0.05). A significant mother occupation influence was observed on adolescent risky behaviour t(654.36) =7.315, p< 0.05). Finally, there is significant difference between adolescents who are in-school and their non-school going on risky sexual behaviour t(695.9) = - 10.888, p< 0.05).The findings show that drugs use has significant influence on risky sexual behaviour and psychological health of male adolescents. The study recommends that preventive health programs which address adolescents’ reproductive health be combined with appropriate drug education to achieve maximum benefit.
