SON commences monitoring of Oil Bases Nationwide
Director General Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON),Dr Joseph Ikemefuna Odumodu says the organisation has commenced monitoring and sampling of base Oil at all points of entry across the country.
Odumodo stated this when he received stakeholders from Lubricants Producers Association of Nigeria(LUPAN) in Abuja.
He noted that the exercise is to renew the fight against the proliferation of adulterated Lubricants,importation of poor quality off-spec base Oil and also establish a database on blending plants and consumption of base Oil in the country to stem the tide of diversion and adulteration of the product.
According to him, "market statistics,intelligence and analysis indicated that at least 300million metric tons of base oil is imported annually into the country for lubricants production,while the total plants production capacity of 60million metric tons that do not go to the plants".
"In Nigeria an average of more than 300million litres of lubricating oil are consumed annually. the potential waste oil level is about 80% of the annual consumption and thus the environment is pruned to over 240million litres of used lubricating oils without adequate management frameworks".
He further said that the organisation has constantly ensured production of good products and services by dogged commitment to the organisations core values of expertise, discipline, integrity, consumer focus and teamwork.
Odumodu also restated Federal Government's commitment in the fight against substandard products including Lubricants in Nigeria.
The chairman,Lubricants Producers Association of Nigeria(LUPAN) Mr Anthony Enukeme in his remarks said that the are here to bring the standard into Oil business.
He said that Nigeria is losing a lot of money as a result of increase importation of substandard and oil products in the country.
Enukeme therefore called on Standard Organisation of Nigeria to introduce standard in oil business.
