Gov. Emmanuel Flags Off Environmental Sanitation
Akwa Ibom State government has declared war against indiscriminate disposal of waste and has accordingly set up a task force to apprehend defaulters.
Governor Udom Emmanuel announced this while flagging off the state
monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise at Ibom Plaza, Uyo.
He observed that clean environment determines the well being of it
citizens and that Akwa Ibom people are known for their exceptional
cleanliness. He called on the people to uphold the core values that
are inherent in them.
The governor stated that a perfect waste disposal policy must be
implemented in view of the industrialization drive of his
administration and directed the Heath Commissioner Dr Dorminic Ukpong
to liaise with the relevant ministries and identity appropriate
waste disposal point for disposal of human, medical and industrial
waste.
The State Chief Executive used the occasion to draw the attention of
people erecting structures near the ravine stating that they are
risking lives and property and called on the Ministry of Lands,
Housing and Urban Renewal to senitise people on building regulations.
The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources Dr Iniobong
Essien said that the ministry has declared war against dirty
environment and called for the protection of environment for the
safety of lives and property. This, Dr Essien said is to justify the
status of the state as a model for cleanliness and development.
He commended the governor's vision of reintroducing the sanitation
exercise and thanked him for participating in it flat off.
Highpoint of the exercise was the symbolic sweeping of the road and
removal of debris from gutter by Governor. Emmanuel.
