Press Briefing By Gov. Amaechi On Killings And Harassment Of APC Members

I have called this press briefing because of the daily killings and harassment of APC members in Rivers State under the watchful eyes of the Nigerian police. Despite several letters to the Inspector General of Police and numerous meetings with the Police commissioner in Rivers State requesting protection of the lives and properties APC members have been denied the most basic of human rights, the right to life.

Regretably Rivers State’s greatest offence is being the home state of the wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Mrs Jonathan has made it her life’s ambition to murder all APC members in Rivers State.

You will recall that on February 17, 2015, there was an attempt on the life of the APC Governorship candidate, Hon Dakuku Adol Peterside when he went for a campaign rally in Okrika. From reliable intelligence available to the APC, it is believed by the PDP that assassinating Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside is the last resort and only way of stopping the victory of the APC in the forthcoming elections based on the popularity and acceptability of the APC Candidate amongst Rivers voters.

Ordinarily, the Campaign Organization would have taken this information with a pinch of salt and possibly ignored same as another ploy to distract the APC in the State from its robust campaigns. The fears of the Campaign Organization are however heightened by the recent act of withdrawal of Police Security from top APC chieftains in the State including (incredulously) that of her Gubernatorial Candidate, Hon. Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside.

This fear is fuelled by the unanswered question as to whether this withdrawal of security personnel is linked to the aforesaid story of plans to assassinate Dr. Peterside and possibly has the backing of top echelons of the Security Agencies in the State and Country. Those hired for this assassination attempt are still roaming free in Port Harcourt housed and catered for by Barrister Nyesom Wike, the PDP governorship candidate in Iwaikwowo Hotel off Oroekpo road, owned by one Promise Onuoha Nyesom Wike’s cousin.

Unfortunately the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State has led to a great escalation of these acts of killings, unlawful arrests and detention on frivolous and unsubstantiated reasons as well as constant and un-abating harassment using the very same Police meant to protect all sides. Specifically DCP John Amadi, DC Operations and Promise Nwosu, head of SARS are in the fore of this

The most ridiculous is that the Police whom we are supposed to run to for protection have commenced the withdrawal of Police security for top APC members including that of the Gubernatorial Candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside. Where then we may ask lies our hope and the hope of the common man and all seekers of justice and protection if the Police in Rivers State can so blatantly and unashamedly take sides in the Politics of the State? Has the Police stooped so low to become the enforcement wing of the PDP in Rivers State? For the purpose of elucidation, we will list hereunder a few names, dates and times of APC members killed, arrested and/or unlawfully harassed just in the last few days as follows:

We wish to again point out that whilst the recent rash unlawful arrests, harassments and illegal detention of APC members in the State using SARS and Zone 6 officers of the Police Force is taking place daily, nothing seems to be happening in respect of our various petitions and except the Almighty God, we are left with no protection from the law enforcement agencies and PDP is being encouraged to run amok and take the laws into their hands. This has invariably caused the generality of our members in the State to lose confidence in the ability of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State to protect all the citizens alike.

It is sad that because of the clear partisanship and deliberate attempt Rivers people could not be living at a worse season of insecurity now than ever, pitiably, under an Inspector General of Police, who co-incidentally had been a Commissioner of Police in the state. The IG cannot claim ignorance of the huge security gap that the adminsteration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has filled in Rivers State over the years. We are thus left to conclude that Mr. Suleiman is obviously sympathetic to the PDP and would rather protect the interest of the party rather than that of the generality of Nigerians.

We therefore challenge IGP Suleiman Abba to prove to Nigerians that he is still an officer and a gentleman.

I thank you for listening. Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, CON, Governor, Rivers State.
