Press Release From Ekiti State Deputy Governor's Office

Be proactive at reducing natural disasters - Fayose Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has charged residents to be more proactive at reducing cases of natural disasters which often claim lives and valuable properties, adding that such ugly incidences could be prevented if necessary precautions were taken to forestall them.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the distribution of relief materials to victims of natural disasters in the state, held at the Ware House of the State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA) Adehun, Ado-Ekiti, the governor said it was usually painful seeing people losing their lives and valuable properties to disasters which could actually be prevented if simple caution had been taken initially.

Governor Fayose who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kolapo Olusola noted that most of the disasters were directly or indirectly caused by the people when they carelessly erect structures on water ways or use substandard building materials and electrical wares for building construction, with the aim of saving cost.

He advised the people to consider the future implications of whatever they do in the present to forestall preventable disasters which has rendered many people homeless, not only in Ekiti but across the country.

Fayose said his administration would ensure that no Ekiti resident, irrespective of tribe, religious or party affiliation would be allowed to suffer unnecessarily, no matter the circumstances surrounding his/her challenges.

While thanking President Goodluck Jonathan for making the relief materials available to the state through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the governor added that the materials would be distributed judiciously to only genuine victims of natural disasters.

In his welcome address, the Special Assistant to the Governor on State Environmental Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Rasheed Akinwale commended the Governor, Dr. Ayodele Fayose for providing the logistic for the transportation of the materials to the state.

In his remark, the Head of operations in Ekiti, Mr. Saheed Akiode who represented the NEMA Director Genera, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi, commiserated with the victims in Ekiti, assuring them of government aids.

The Director General thanked the government of Ekiti State for its pro-active measures and prompt response at ensuring that the materials got to the victims.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Pa Olayemi James and 2 others thanked the federal government and Dr. Ayo Fayose for giving them succor adding that the materials distributed will definitely address some of their challenges and reduce their distress.

Relief materials distributed included iron roofing sheets, nails, cement, mattresses, ceiling boards, blankets, guinea brocade, and detergent and food stuff such as rice among others.
