AU Commissioner worried over security situation in South Sudan

The AU Commissioner for Political  Affairs, Dr Aisha Abdullahi, on Tuesday expressed concern over the security situation in South Sudan following the attempted coup in that country on Monday.

Abdullahi spoke to reporters in Abuja shortly after meeting Nigeria’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Viola Onwuliri to discuss the forthcoming high level meeting on humanitarian issues in Abuja.

She said the AU had done its best to ensure that South Sudan and it’s neighbouring Sudan live in peace and was encouraged by the progress recorded in the bilateral relations between both countries.

“But this attempted unconstitutional change of government is something that the AU frowns out.

“Recently the AU meeting on governance held in Senegal focused on constitutionalism and the rule of law in Africa because we are retrogressing with what we witnessed in Egypt, Central African Republic and Guinea Bissau.

She pledged that the regional group would do all within it’s power to ensure peace and security  in the continent.

Earlier, Abdullahi said she was in Abuja to hold consultations on next year’s  high level ministerial meeting on forced displacements in Africa.

She said Abuja has been selected to host the meeting and appealed for the minister’s support to ensure a successful outing.

Responding, Onwuliri welcomed the nomination of Abuja to host the meeting but noted that accepting the offer was subject to the president’s approval.
