Social Media Is Flooding Music Industry with Half-Baked Artists – YCee

Nigerian rapper and singer Oludemilade Martin Alejo, popularly known as YCee, has raised concerns over the impact of social media platforms on the quality of talent in the music industry.

Speaking in a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, the 'Jagaban' crooner lamented that platforms like TikTok have made it easier for anyone to pose as an artist once their sound goes viral.

YCee noted that music executives with power and funding are no longer focusing solely on talent but are now chasing virality. He argued that this trend has led to the influx of many half-baked musicians into the industry. According to him, social media has lowered the barrier to entry, allowing people who are not truly artists to gain traction.

The rapper expressed sadness that record label executives are now prioritising viral moments over genuine talent, which he believes is affecting the overall quality of music being produced.

He said: "Platforms like TikTok have made it easier for a lot of people to do music to the extent that even someone who is not an artist would start posing as an artist once they do a sound and it goes viral.

"Sadly, music executives with power and funding no longer focus only on talent—they are now chasing virality."
