Ekiti State Government Confirms Attack On First Lady’s Convoy In Oye

By Yinka Oyebode

The Government of Ekiti State hereby confirms that the convoy of the First Lady of the State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, was attacked during a protest by students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti on Tuesday.

Whilst acknowledging that the protest might have started as a peaceful one, there was an escalation to violence, possibly due to infiltration by hoodlums.

Erelu Fayemi was in Oye Local Government in continuation of her community engagement and advocacy tour of the state. She had commenced the Tuesday’s tour from Moba Local Government and had visited Ilejemeje Local Government before arriving in Oye-Ekiti for the last leg of the tour.

The students had earlier in the day taken over major streets in the town, protesting against the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), over power outage in the area. Government was not petitioned nor alerted of this plight prior to the protest.

The convoy of the Wife of the Governor was attacked with several vehicles vandalised, leaving many people, including journalists, with varying degrees of injuries.

Those injured during the attack have been given first aid treatment, while some are still receiving treatment in the hospital.

While not denying the students the right to express their grievances on any issue, it is expected that such be done without resulting to violence.

Ekiti State Government has been informed that there might have been casualties recorded during the incident. We await more details of this sad development from the school authorities. Nothing is worth the loss of any life.

As a responsible government, it is on record that the State Government has been engaging the electricity company (BEDC) on how to improve the power situation in parts of the State, long before this unfortunate incident, and promise to continue to engage them on the improvement of their service delivery to Ekiti State.

The general public is hereby advised to go about their normal activities as the situation is now under control.

Signed

Aare Muyiwa Olumilua

Commissioner for Information, Tourism, and Values Orientation

```🎇COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE STUDENT UNION AFTER THE PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION🎇```
_The Student Union Led a peaceful demonstration today, September 10th, 2019._
_The Peaceful Protest which lasted for hours at Aiyegbaju National Grid Zone and PHCN Office. The Protest ended at exactly 1:40pm after the Union President addressed the Press Media._
_There was peaceful flow of traffic as armed officials at the peaceful demonstration helped in making the peaceful flow of traffic._
_From the beginning to the end of the protest, there was not a single case of quarrel nor fight. The protest was not been hijacked by anyone._
_Our major plight for holding the protest was to appeal to the right authorities, among which is the government, assist in fixing our poor electricity supply._
_Students went back to their various destination and hostels._
_Hours after the peaceful demonstration ended, the Student Union President, who was resting at his friend's apartment was called by his executives at ikole campus at exactly some minutes after 4pm to notify him that some of the students were being arrested and they were on their way to Oye-Ekiti._
_The Student Union President told his General Secretary about the new development that he would meet with the security personnel in order to secure the bail of the arrested students. After meeting with the DPO of Oye Police Division and the Army Personnel, they promised that they will get the students released immediately they get to Oye._
_The President went back to his resting place and minutes after the Army Official came to request for the Student Union President through the Student Union president's Personal Assistance._
_The Student Union President came out of the room where he was resting to meet the Army officer whom together they approached the road which led to the Civic Center._
_The President was standing with the Army Officer, the Chief Security Officer to the Governor and some police personnel when a CTU security Officer came from an unknown destination and slapped the President right in front of CSO to the Governor, the Army Official and other policemen._
_Immediately the Security officials made it known to the CTU Security personel that he is the union President He slapped, and they started appealing and pleading to the Student Union President. Students at the scene were raged but the President together with the CSO to the Governor and Army Official calmed the situation. Shortly after, the Union President left the vicinity after he told the Army Officer that he would love to take his leave to rest as he was having series of muscle pulls which was as a result of the stress and morning trek._
_He further informed the CSO to the governor and took his leave._
_What follows after he left the scene were series of gun sounds. However, the CSO to the governor was spotted holding the officer who shot to cease the shooting, but he could not control it as other police officials started shooting guns at students and indigenes. Hence, the police officers started a combat/riot with the students._
_Information reaching us confirmed that three students were severely injured by the policemen while one has been confirmed dead as a result of the live bullet used. The injured students are currently undergoing medical treatments in different hospitals._
_It has also gotten to our notice that the police officers continued their gun shots at students and kept destroying students properties without any consideration._
_On this sad note, the Student's Union Leaders hereby appeal to the generality of our comrades and students in struggle to kindly stay indoor till normalcy is restored in the community._
_As it is an injustice to one is an injustice to all, we further appeal to our Government to quickly take adequate measure against the police officers that used shot at students for holding a peaceful demonstration which unexpectedly led to the sudden death of our beloved brother._
_Present at the Peaceful demonstration today were the *S. A TO THE GOVERNOR EKITI ON POLITICAL MATTERS, NANS NATIONAL VICE CHAIRMAN, THE NAUS SOUTH WEST VICE PRESIDENT, NANS JCC EKITI EX CHAIRMAN, THE PRESS MEDIA, THE EX NLC CHAIRMAN and other personnel._
