Let Potential Ministers in Nigeria Take Psychological Test

By John Egbeazien Oshodi, Ph.D.

President Muhammadu Buhari as you diligently work towards forming your cabinet with persons who will help the nation in the right direction, knowing what motivates such political leader is crucial.

Understanding the individual’s level of self-disciple, and having a comprehensive and deeper psychological shape of the individual’s personality is important.

Full Psychological testing, not psychiatric assessment which focuses more on the biological aspects of mental illness and psychiatric medications, will be required to help screen out potential ministers with damaged personality characteristics and screen in those with personality profiles that could make them suitable for ministerial work.

What is required is a battery of standardized psychological assessments which include testing for the fundamental personality, emotional, and cognitive traits of persons.

Psychological determination will help in screening out those with deceitful, conscienceless, unkind, manipulative, self-dramatic, selfish, and ruthless characteristics; and help screen in those with qualities of charisma, empathy, selflessness, expediency, and compassion.

Through the psychological evaluation process, we can detect those with indicators of dishonesty, moral omissions, and a sense of hostility, bitterness, all-powerfulness, or abusiveness.

Through the psychological evaluation, we can detect those with good problem-solving skills, of average and above intelligence, and those who can act appropriately in very tempting situations, as well as detect those who are impulsive, sexually wobbly, drink heavily, or have difficulties managing their financial lives.

Through psychological exposures, potential ministers that will behave responsibly and show genuine care for the people and society will be revealed.

Those who are deeply wired with characteristics of psychopathy, narcissism, sociopathy or those who are outright evil in their mentality and lack feelings of moral and social responsibilities will be screened out.

Through psychological testing, potential nominees with manners of anti-social characteristics, profiles of falsehoods, and extra affection for power and authority will be exposed.

Mr. President it is essential we do this now, so as to weed out the bad ones at an early stage, before they can do more damage to our already troubled young nation.

Let us do this in order to find out persons with suitability for positions of power, and fully prone to democratic belief, and ethical character. In this historic period of rebuilding Nigeria, let’s use the psychological process in the form of a new broom to sweep out bad nominees and bring in potentially successful ministers.

This is very important before they are allowed to take up positions of power and responsibility in society; otherwise, as we have seen in the last decade we will again be reduced to the chaos of a troubled society.

By the way, Mr. President, I am ready to serve our nation on this issue with no cost to no one.

Assessing psychological profile of politicians generally is an excellent idea. It's important to note that accepting psychology and the role it plays in the society is the challenge we have in Nigeria and Africa at-large. Most top companies in the developed countries adopt psychological screening to select absolute best matches for leadership positions. That's because the companies have learned that bad leadership can cost alot of money and bad reputation. But while bad leadership can cost millions, bad leaders or politicians can cost the whole country billions or more, peoples' life could be astake in terms of education, security, health care, good infrastructure etc. And you will all agree with me we are currently facing the same challenge in Nigeria. In line with this, psychologist needs to assess critical thinking skills, communication skills, people relational skills, problem solving leadership and motivational skills as well as one's ability to cope with stress and conflict. So that with this we will not keep having the same circle of political leaders with criminal behavior and criminal tendencies, whether they get to learn while in office before now or they have it in them in built ( nature, nature). We are quite hopeful that with this on going project (Oshodian Psychology) we will make an impact in Nigeria and Africa at-large. Thank you.

This is a good idea and suggestion at the same time. From the look of things most of them need this test as the test will determine their mental and health status. As it stands, since the inception of democracy in 2999 most of the appointed ministers have a below expectations; ministeries like power, defense, water, and a host of others dormant. We don't know whether is the appointed persons that are not qualified academically or physically,or it's the politics that is hindering that w can't tell. Also, the issue of corruption may also be one of the factors. Nevertheless, any appointed minister must be mentally, academically, morally, and religiously sound for he/her to perform the task given to him/her Thanks, Emmanuel Asaatse.

Emmanuel Asaatse I. I think this is the right time and dispensation for such test to be carried out.Since the present government is ready to stop corruption or should I say reduces corruption, this is a welcome idea .In the past we have heard of prominent ministers of NNPC ,Education,Power etc charged for corruption. If not greed they have are being paid as at when due and bogus allowance given to them yet they are not satisfied only to loot the treasury and at the end of the day you see them going to religious houses and singing praises how they have been blessed by God,this is very shameful. However the test should not stop at that level it should be extended to our institutions of higher learning, councillors, the chairmen of our local government area and public individual who are willing to occupy public offices.
