SHEKARAU BLAMES PAST GOVTS FOR MASS FAILURE IN NECO, WAEC

By NBF NEWS

The Kano State Governor, Malam

KANO State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has attributed the poor performance of students in 2010 National Examinations Council and West African Examinations Council examinations to the neglect of education by past governments in the country, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Addressing members of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in the New Jersey chapter at a town hall meeting in Newark, United States, the governor said the situation was more pathetic, saying that the development touched on the future of the country.

Shekarau said that education, being the foundation of all development efforts, should not be treated with levity.

He noted that most of the current leaders attended public schools which had now been left to degenerate.

The governor said given that those affected by the mass failure were mostly the youths, the situation remained a source of concern to every well meaning Nigerians.

He said, 'This is food for thought for all of us whether you are living at home or abroad, as Nigeria belongs to all of us.'

Shekarau equally criticised some of his colleagues whom he said sacked teachers, claiming they could not afford to pay their huge wage bill but used the money to award contracts that were never executed.

He said, 'The problem now is, if you neglect education for too long, usually it takes you three times or five times longer to rectify.

'Tell those that need to hear, to give our children better education, as this is the future of Nigeria.'

Meanwhile, Shekarau has said that Nigerians need attitudinal change to stem the tide of corruption in the country.

He said, 'Attitudinal change is an imperative for all citizens against the penchant of creating anti-graft agencies, which are like glorified police stations.'
