Canada / Statement from Minister Baird on Death of Ghana's President John Evans Atta Mills

OTTAWA, Canada, July 25, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“I was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Ghana's President, John Evans Atta Mills.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada and Canadians, I extend our deepest condolences to the people of Ghana and to the family and friends of President Mills.
“Under President Mills' stewardship, Ghana experienced unprecedented economic growth and prosperity and cemented its reputation as a model of democracy and stability within Africa.
“Canada and Ghana have been partners in development since 1957. Under President Mills' leadership, the ties between our two countries deepened even further as a result of our common goals of promoting improved governance and respect for human rights.
“In November 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper met President Mills during his visit to Ottawa. President Mills was a friend to Canada and will be remembered as a true leader.”
