ASUU URGES FG TO ADDRESS NATION'S SECURITY CHALLENGE

Lagos  - The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to address the spate of bombings in some parts of the country.

The ASUU President, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, made the call in a telephone interview in Lagos.

Awuzie spoke against the backdrop of Sunday's bomb attacks and killing of some students and staff of Bayero University Kano (BUK) during a worship service.

He said that the current security challenge in the country was becoming worrisome and a national embarrassment.

'We are troubled as a nation to experience the current incidences of bombing in every part of the country.

'For these people to start attacking universities and media houses that are very critical stakeholders in the development of the nation leaves so much to be desired.

'It is indeed very sad; l call on the Federal Government to rise to the occasion and go the extra mile to check this ugly trend,' Awuzie said.

Commenting on the 'Workers' Day' celebration, Awuzie called on public office holders to exhibit leadership qualities that would move the country forward.

He advised them to use their respective positions to fight corruption, adding that the country would not move forward, if the leaders failed to do the right thing.

Awuzie also stressed the need for government to provide the enabling environment for Nigerian workers and also increase their welfare packages.

'Nigerian workers are dedicated, hardworking and had showed a lot of commitment.

'But all their contributions to national development do not seem to be recognised and rewarded.''  (NAN)
