ABUJA, July 28, (THEWILL) - Some senators from the South West Thursday bemoaned the sorry state of the Lagos-Ibadan Highway and asked the federal government to review the concession brokered between it and Bi-Courtney Nigeria Limited, a construction firm, on the rehabilitation of the ever busy highway. The senators further questioned the capacity of the firm to rehabilitate the key road.

A concession deal was reached between Bi-Courtney and the federal government to reconstruct the highway during the administration of late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

However, Speaking for the senators, Senator Femi lanlehin called on the Federal Ministry of Works to do a holistic review of the project and the ability of the concessionaire, Bi-Courtney to carry out the job adding that the review should be completed within a stipulated timeline.

“We believe that the government should directly engage a major competent and proven contractor to handle, complete reconstruction and rehabilitation of the road within the shortest period,” he said.

While they commended the 60 days ultimatum handed the company to complete the project, the senators added that a more comprehensive and holistic approach should be adopted to speed up the job.

They described the road as full of potholes with many areas already collapsed “causing incessant accidents and massive loss of lives and properties.”
