FEMALE ENGINEERS BLAME BUILDING COLLAPSE ON UNPROFESSIONAL PRACTICES

By NBF News

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has blamed the menace of collapsed buildings across the country on lack of professionalism in handling many of the projects.

APWEN President, Mrs. Iniobong Louisa Usoro, stated this recently while speaking on the causes of the several cases of building collapse in recent years. She everybody claims to be an engineer when it comes to construction, adding that 'the presence of unprofessional engineers against the actual engineers, coupled with compromises of standard, play roles in causing many disasters of collapsed buildings across the country.'

Usoro said her association is trying to address the many problems related to the disasters by creating the necessary environment in both the private and public sectors.

She urged more women to embrace the engineering profession considering the fact that 'the potential contribution of women in engineering has been and still is undervalued and under-utilised.'

She also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to consider include women engineers in his cabinet, 'to help engineer the Nigeria of the future which we so much desire.'
