LAGOS, Feb 06, (THEWILL) – Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has finally declared a war on former President Olusegun Obasanjo following the declaration of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it has listed candidates that emerged from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ogun State Chapter Congress conducted by a faction loyal to the former President.

Daniel, who is seeking to run for a senate seat, made the declaration during an address to party members loyal to his faction of the party at the inauguration of his campaign Committee in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

“We are fighting a last fight, we started this war since 2006, and I want you to shine your eyes. We are fighting a last fight because you cannot be in the river and complain of cold,” Daniel said.

The governor accused the Obasanjo faction of trying to rubbish his administration and destroying the party in the process and assured supporters that he would cage the Obasanjo faction into a submission.

“We have used everything to appease them, yet they are adamant and want to use power against us, but shine your eyes. We are in a marathon war, and in this particular fight we will fight it to logical conclusion. They even used opposition media to fight us, an indication that they are working together with opposition party to destroy our party and later move out.

“Those who stole vouchers to nail me; where are they today. We were harassed and intimidated, but God was on our side. I am not personally surprised with what we are witnessing today, you should not be shocked, because of what we have been facing.

“I want to assure you that by May 29, we will successfully transit to government of our choice,” the governor told his supporters.

The battle for the soul of the PDP in Ogun State has generated lots of discuss. Two factions of the party had conducted congresses electing different candidates to represent the party at the general elections in April.

A court injunction obtained by the Obasanjo faction barred the electoral commission from accepting the candidates that emerged from the governor’s faction. So far, the Daniel faction has been unable to procure a superior judgement to vacate the injunction obtained by the Obasanjo faction.

If things remain the way they are, General Tunji Olorin, a former army General would be the party’s guber candidate. Senator Iyabo Bello-Obasanjo would also be one of the party’s senatorial candidates, while the Senatorial ambition of the governor in the PDP would have been dashed. Also, the current bid of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, to return to the House would have been dashed as well, as he belongs to the Daniel faction.
