Arsenal and Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has been officially charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault by the Metropolitan Police Service.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Met disclosed that the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charges after reviewing a file of evidence submitted by detectives. The footballer, identified as Thomas Partey, 32, of Hertfordshire, is now facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022.

“The Met has issued a charge and requisition to Thomas Partey... in connection with the following offences: five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault,” the statement read.

The development comes after months of speculation and media scrutiny surrounding Partey, who has been subject to investigation since 2022. At the time, reports emerged linking an unnamed Premier League player to a sexual assault probe, but official identification was withheld until now.

Partey is expected to appear before the courts in the coming weeks as the legal proceedings commence. Neither Arsenal Football Club nor Partey’s legal representatives have made a formal statement regarding the charges at the time of this report.

The news has sparked widespread reaction across social media, with fans and pundits expressing shock and concern. It also raises questions about his future with Arsenal, as the club prepares for the upcoming Premier League season.

Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 and has been a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad. However, these serious allegations and now formal charges mark a significant turn in both his career and personal life.

More updates are expected as the case progresses through the UK legal system.
