Liverpool Football Club has announced that it will retire the iconic No. 20 jersey in honour of their late forward, Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car crash in Spain. The fatal accident, which also claimed the life of his brother, André Silva, left the football world in mourning.

Jota, aged 28 at the time of his death, was instrumental in Liverpool’s recent Premier League triumph during the 2024–2025 season their historic 20th English top-flight title. His last memorable contribution came in the Merseyside derby where his signature shimmy finish sealed victory, a goal that has since taken on added emotional significance.

In a heartfelt statement released on the club’s official website on Thursday, Liverpool described Jota’s impact both on and off the pitch as unforgettable. The club revealed that “as a mark of eternal respect,” the No. 20 shirt will be “rightly immortalised,” ensuring no future player will wear it again.

Jota is survived by his wife, Rute, and their three children, and tributes have continued to pour in from across the football world. Liverpool fans, teammates, and legends alike have hailed his professionalism, humility, and drive.

“Diogo was more than a player he was a brother to all of us,” a club source noted. “Retiring his shirt is the least we can do to preserve his legacy.”

The Portuguese Football Federation, UEFA, and FIFA have all paid tribute to the fallen star, with UEFA announcing a moment of silence in upcoming matches. Former manager Jürgen Klopp expressed his devastation, calling the loss “absolutely heartbreaking.”

As Liverpool prepares for the upcoming season, the memory of Jota will remain an enduring presence at Anfield forever No. 20.
