Omeruo Joins CFR Cluj After Kasimpasa Exit
Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has secured a new move, joining Romanian side CFR Cluj on a free transfer after parting ways with Kasimpasa earlier this year.
Omeruo, who previously played in the Turkish Super Lig, will now don the jersey of CFR Cluj, one of Romania’s top football clubs with eight league titles to their name. The experienced centre-back becomes the sixth Nigerian to feature for the club, with fellow countryman Philip Otele currently part of the squad.
The 31-year-old’s arrival is seen as a key reinforcement for manager Dan Petrescu, as the club eyes another strong league campaign following their Romanian Cup success last season. Omeruo’s leadership and international pedigree are expected to add stability and depth to Cluj’s defensive setup.
Since his exit from Kasimpasa in February, speculation had swirled around Omeruo’s next destination, but the deal with CFR Cluj marks a fresh chapter in the former Chelsea man’s career. With appearances at two FIFA World Cups and multiple AFCON tournaments, his wealth of experience is unmatched among defenders in the Romanian league.
CFR Cluj’s move for Omeruo also highlights the growing presence of Nigerian talents in Eastern European football, where clubs are increasingly seeking value in proven African players. Omeruo’s blend of defensive solidity, aerial strength, and tactical intelligence will be crucial as the team mounts a challenge for domestic and European honours in the 2025/26 season.
This transfer not only bolsters CFR Cluj’s ambitions but also presents Omeruo with a chance to revive his club career and stay in contention for future Super Eagles call-ups.
