Luis Enrique Mocks Premier League as PSG Dump Arsenal Out of UCL
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has taken a swipe at English football clubs, mocking the Premier League as a "league of farmers" after his side knocked Arsenal out of the UEFA Champions League to reach the final.
PSG defeated the Gunners 3-1 on aggregate in their semi-final tie, sealing a place in the final against Inter Milan. The French champions, often mocked with the derogatory label "farmers' league" due to the perceived lower competitiveness of Ligue 1, have now eliminated four Premier League teams in their 2024/2025 Champions League campaign Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal.
Speaking after the match, Enrique referenced the jibe in his post-match comments to TNT Sports, saying: “The league of farmers, no? We are the league of farmers… but it’s nice. We are enjoying the result and the compliments of everybody speaking of our team — our mentality, how we play.”
Enrique also praised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, whom he described as “a great friend,” but insisted PSG deserved the win. “They play the way they want and love to play, but in the two legs, we scored more goals than them and that is the most important thing,” he added.
With the Ligue 1 title already secured, PSG are on course for a historic treble. They face Reims in the Coupe de France final on May 24 before clashing with Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Munich a week later.
The victory over Arsenal not only secures a shot at European glory but also silences critics of French football, at least for now, as the so-called "farmers" now stand tall among Europe's elite.
