JOS, Sept 08, (THEWILL) - Eight students of the University of Jos who were arrested by the police on Tuesday have been released.

The students, including the Students’ Union President, Mr. Hitler Pwajok were arrested in the wake of the students’ protest over the introduction of N10, 000 development levy by the school authorities.

The Police Commissioner, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba urged students to always explore dialogue in resolving their grievances with the school authority.

He said that when he got the hint on Tuesday that the students were organizing a protest, he instructed the Commander of the Squadron 8 of the Mobile Police Force, Mr. Anietie Eyoh, to mount surveillance at the entrance of the school to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The commissioner added that it was when the students saw the policemen that they became violent and started throwing stones at his officers.

He warned that the police would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt peace in the state.
