Wimbledon 2022:  serena Williams To Face Tan

By Chigozie Anueyiagu, The Nigerian Voice Sports

This year’s competition gets underway next week and there are some enticing first-round matchups across the men’s and the women’s draw.

Simona Halep, who won the tournament in 2019, starts her account against former quarter-finalist Karolina Muchova. Williams, on the other hand, is well known to those who have frequented SW19 in the past and will be vying for her eighth title at the All England Club.

On paper, both players seemingly have a somewhat favourable draw. Here’s who they could face in each round.

Williams will start her campaign against world number 121 Harmony Tan. Her doubles in Eastbourne came to a swift end as her partner Ons Jabeaur picked up an injury.

Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo could await in round two. Williams beat the 25-year-old in doubles last week, though Tormo is a more accomplished singles player.

Round three would likely see Williams face last year’s beaten finalist Karolina Pliskova. The Czech player is a grass court specialist but lost to Britain’s Katie Boulter in Eastbourne this week.

In the last 16, there is a strong chance the 40-year-old could face either Coco Gauff or Amanda Animisova. Both players are rising US stars and it would be fascinating to see the Wimbledon veteran battle the new generation.
