Eintracht Frankfurt have won the Europa League after beating Rangers in Wednesday’s final on penalties.

RafaelBorre scored Eintracht’s winning penalty after also netting the equaliser in regular time as the match finished 1-1 after 90 and 120 minutes.

Extra-time substitute and former Arsenal player AaronRamsey was the only Rangers player to miss a spot-kick, as Eintracht triumphed 5-4 in the shootout at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

After a cagey first half, Rangers took the lead early in the second half when when super Eagle international Joe Aribo capitalised on a slip from Tuta and calmly slid the ball past KevinTrapp .

Eintracht equalised in the 69th-minute, however, when Borre poked home from Filip Kostic’s low cross from the left.

Chances were hard to come by in regular time after the two goals, with the heat in Seville seeming to play a part.

That pattern of play continued in extra-time, with Borna Barisic’s long-range effort the closest the game came to a third goal.

Rangers’ last international trophy came in 1972, when they lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

The Glasgow side also played in the UEFA Cup final in 2008, but lost 2-0 to Zenit Saint Petersburg. StevenDavis , who came on as a second-half substitute against Eintracht, also played for Rangers in that match.

Eintracht’s only previous European honours came in 1980, when they won the UEFA Cup.

Rangers’ next game comes on Saturday when they face Hearts in the Scottish Cup final.
