A Will Ferrell comedy about a boy raised as an elf at the North Pole is to be turned into a Broadway musical.

Elf – The Musical will run at New York's Al Hirschfeld Theatre from 2 November to 2 January, producers have announced.

Its score will be written by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, who previously collaborated on a musical version of Adam Sandler comedy The Wedding Singer.

Cast members for the nine-week run have yet to be announced.

Elf, released in 2003, saw Will Ferrell travel to New York to find his father, played by James Caan.

It was directed by the actor Jon Favreau, who went on to make Iron Man and its recent sequel.
