Andrea Pirlo has been appointed as the new coach of Juventus few hours after the club sacked Maurizio Sarri.

The former Chelsea coach was relieved of his duties on Saturday after the club crashed out of the Uefa Champions League with a 2-2 aggregate score against Lyon.

Pirlo was initially named the club's U-23 coach late last month but he has been given the club's top job.

This is Pirlo's first coaching job after he retired in 2015.

According to a statement on the club's website:

"Today, begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football, as it was said almost a week ago: from Maestro to Mister.

"From today he will be THE coach for people of Juventus, as the club has decided to entrust him with the technical leadership of the First Team, after having already selected him for Juventus Under 23".

"Today's choice is based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench, an expert and talented squad to pursue new successes".

Pirlo has signed a two-year contract and he will be hoping to guide Juventus to their first Champions League trophy since 1995.
