Southampton recorded a shock 1-0 victory over Manchester City. Guradiola made six changes to the side that spanked Liverpool 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

De Bruyne was on the bench but it was still a strong team which should not have problem defeating the Saints.

Che Adams scored a rocket opener for the hosts to give them the lead, the goal drew a quick response from Man City. Fernandinho's effort hit the bar, McCarthy was in an inspired form to deny Gabriel Jesus from getting City back into the game.

Southampton had their own chances but Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings failed to convert the rare opportunities.

Manchester City did all they could but to no avail, Southampton held on to record a surprise victory.

City have lost nine Premier League games this season, last losing more in a single campaign in 2015-16 under Manuel Pellegrini, when they lost 10.

Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 2-0 courtesy of goals from Saido Mane and Curtis Jones to earn a record 17 win from 17 home matches.

The Reds need 12 points from their last five matches to beat Man City's record of 100 points a season.

Newcastle and West Ham played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, while Sheffield United share the spoils with Burnley by playing out a 1-1 draw.
