Nigeria's Israel Adesanya defeated Yoel Romero to retain UFC Middleweight title via unanimous decision in his first title defence.

The judges scored the fight 48 - 47 , 48 - 47 and 49 - 46 – all for Adesanya .

The undisputed middleweight champion showed his grit and resilience to overcome Romero.

"I did what I had to do and picked him apart,” Adesanya said. “The legs don’t lie. I f—ed his leg up,” Adesanya said just after the fight. “As long as [the judges] didn’t listen to the crowd, I was fine.”

The victory made Adesanya the fastest fighter to go 8-0 in the UFC (755 days) beating the record set by Anderson Silva who reached that milestone in 850 days.

Adesanya is the fourth middleweight fighter to have started his first UFC career with 8-0 joining the likes of Yoel Romero, Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman.

The victorious Adesanya is expected to rake in $500,000 for the fight, while Romero goes home with at least $300,000, according to Nevada State Athletic Commission. (NSAC)
