Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has taken a significant step forward in his recovery from a horrific leg break by resuming light training at the club's Carrington training ground.

Shaw has not played a game for the Red Devils since suffering a double leg break against PSV in the Champions League on September 16.

Louis van Gaal revealed last week Shaw would train separately from the United squad, since he is not yet ready for ball work.

United midfielder Juan Mata confirmed the news as he posted a picture of the pair on his Instagram account.

“My friend Luke Shaw just came in from running out on the pitch! Getting close,” Mata said.

Despite the good news, Shaw’s hopes of playing at Euro 2016 appear to be over after Van Gaal said on Friday the 20-year-old is unlikely to feature for United again this season.

“Luke Shaw shall start next week the first training sessions on the pitch [sic],” Van Gaal said. “It was always in the gym, on the treadmill, in the swimming pool and so on, but now he can train for the first time with his bodyweight on the pitch, so it is going great for him.

“But also, it shall be very difficult for him to play the final of the FA Cup.”
