Mohamed Zidan will be out of action for six months after his injury

Egypt striker Mohamed Zidan has been ruled out of action for six months with a torn cruciate knee ligament.

The 28-year-old Borussia Dortmund star suffered the injury to his right knee during Sunday's 1-1 Bundesliga draw at home to Hoffenheim.

Zidan is to undergo an operation later this week after a scan confirmed the extent of the injury.

He could miss Egypt's first two 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the start of the new season in Germany.

Dortmund will have to do without the striker for their final three league matches of this season as they bid to seal third spot.

They are fifth in the table, one point adrift of third-place Werder Bremen and fourth-place Bayer Leverkusen.

Reigning African champions Egypt face South Africa, Sierra Leone and Niger in their qualifying group.
