Allegation Of Corruption: My Story—Amaechi Detail Banking Transactions Inside
Former Governor of Rivers State and Director General of the Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has responded to allegations of corruption and stealing of public funds heaped on him. Amaechi, who made history as the first Nigerian to head an opposition party's campaign that shoved aside a sitting President, had been accused of ripping-off Rivers to several bilions of Naira. However, Amaechi has rebutted the claims raised by his political foes in Rivers State. Amaechi supervised the flushing out from office former President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The denial by Amaechi came through past Rivers State Government functionaries who served under him. The functionaries not only dismissed the allegations but wrote to have written to President Muhammadu Buhari on the financial procedures the Administration of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi used in running the state. Immediate past Secretary to State Government, George Feyii, and the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Chamberlain Peterside, in a letter to Pres Buhari obtained by The Neighbourhood, disclaimed claims of corrupt enrichment made against Amaechi by a group that said its name was The Integrity Group. However, the group is known to be made of loyalists of Rivers State Governor, Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike.
In the letter, the former state functionaries gave detail explanation on the transaction entered into by the past administration concerning key projects in the state. While exonerating Amaechi and former officials of state of the claims made by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as contained in an open publications in some Nigerian dailies, the former functionaries regretted that the action was ill-conceived with the sole aim to malign the integrity of Amaechi and his Administration. They further argued that Amaechi had conducted state matters, including financial deals, with transparency. Stating specific records of the transactions, the former functionaries said they felt a sense of responsibility to state the facts.
They further rubbished the claims as contained in the PDP claims with particulars of the sale of some percentage of the state’s assets in the Independent Power Projects executed by the state. The former state functionaries explained that the decision to sell 70% of Rivers state investment in the power project was a decision of the State Executive Council, SEC, informed by prevalent economic actions of the then Federal Government. They also revealed that prior to that decision, the Rivers State Government was indebted to Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, and AGIP Oil, two of its gas suppliers, to the tune of N7 billion.
They added that the state was spending about N1billion annually in maintenance of the power plants without commensurate returns in the form of electricity supply, therefore, the decision to unbundle such load. While lampooning the petitioners on their self-serving mission, they urged President Buhari to ignore the fabrications only meant to smear Amaechi.
