First Bank of Nigeria Limited has commended the commitment of Nigerian workers and their relentless contributions to economic growth.

The bank said this in a statement celebrating the Nigerian workers in commemoration of the May Day.

As part of the activities to mark the May Day, the lender said it would lend its support to the 7-Star Worker conference aimed at boosting workers' contribution to business and economic growth.

The 2015 edition of the conference is themed 'Growing SMEs into global businesses' and will hold on May 1 in Lagos.

First Bank said the conference would focus on the SMEs due to their role in contributing to a higher proportion of the nation's Gross Domestic Product.

The conference provides an effective platform to equip workers with the requisite skills to excel in the workplace while it motivates aspiring entrepreneurs to start their own enterprises.

'The conference is designed to inform and inspire participants to become world-class in their outlook, increase productivity in the work place, and elaborate on key factors in starting and keeping a business.' the lender noted.

First Bank said it had made various contributions to the growth of SMEs.

The Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications, First Bank, Mrs. Folake Ani-Mumuney, said the SMEs were pivotal to economic development and this informed its decision to focus point on it in the bank's mass market segment.
