Barcelona believe Lionel Messi will be fit for Sunday's La Liga trip to Celta Vigo after his foot injury showed signs of improvement.

The 27-year-old did not feature in either of Argentina's friendlies over the past week after sustaining a knock to his right foot in Barcelona's Clasico win over Real Madrid.

However, the Barca skipper took part in some light running and stretching alongside Javier Mascherano at Barca's training ground on Thursday, despite not being due back until Friday.

The La Liga leaders said on their official website: “The inflammation of Messi's foot has improved and the player will attempt to join the rest of the internationals tomorrow.”

Barca's 2-1 win at home to Real stretched the advantage over their arch rivals to four points and Luis Enrique's side will be hoping to maintain that lead when they travel to the Balaidos.

Second-placed Real Madrid, who have suffered three defeats in their last four matches in all competitions, are also in action on Sunday as they host Granada in the 11am kick-off.
